Last of the Breed

In 2016, the buffalo were chosen as America’s first national mammal

joining the bald eagle as a symbol of America.

Nearly hunted to extinction, from 30 million to 325 in 1884, to approximately 530,000 bison today.

There are kept in private and public lands with roughly 15,000 in the wild.

Respected and revered, the bison provided both sustenance as well as warmth to the ancient Native American ancestors that called the west home. Once teeming, the American Buffalo has earned its rightful place in the prairies as well as the story of America.

The importance of bison in history cannot be undersold and their resilience  inspired me

to paint this majestic creature.
